The Uber Cup is awarded to the world women’s national badminton team champion.
Officially called the TotalEnergies BWF Uber Cup Finals, it is the women’s counterpart to the Thomas Cup. A tie between two national teams consists of three singles matches and two doubles matches, with the team winning at least three matches taking the tie.
The competition was named after Betty Uber, an English badminton player and administrator who proposed a women’s world team event. The first tournament was held in 1957 in Lancashire, England, and the host nation won the inaugural edition.
The Uber Cup is often confused with the Sudirman Cup. The Uber Cup is a women’s team championship, while the Thomas Cup is for men’s teams and the Sudirman Cup is a mixed-team event combining men’s and women’s matches. These competitions are among badminton’s major international team championships.
