Which badminton player won the women's singles title at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Chen Yufei won the badminton women’s singles title at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Representing China, Chen defeated Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying in the final by two games to one. The final was played at Musashino Forest Sport Plaza during the Games, which were held in 2021 after a one-year postponement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chen’s victory gave China another Olympic women’s singles gold medal and added to the country’s strong record in the event. Tai Tzu-ying won silver, while India’s P. V. Sindhu defeated China’s He Bingjiao for bronze.

The event is often called the 2020 Olympics even though the badminton matches took place in 2021. Carolina Marín, the 2016 champion, did not compete because of a knee injury.
