Which badminton player won men's singles gold at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games?

The story behind the answer

Lin Dan won men's singles gold at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.

At Beijing 2008, Lin Dan defeated Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei in the final to claim China's first Olympic men's singles badminton title. Four years later in London, he again defeated Lee Chong Wei in the final, becoming the first badminton player to retain an Olympic singles title.

Lin Dan was known internationally as “Super Dan” and became one of badminton's most decorated singles players. His major achievements also included five BWF World Championships men's singles titles, won in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

A common mix-up is confusing Lin Dan's Olympic record with China's other great champions. Chen Long won men's singles gold in 2016, while Lee Chong Wei reached three Olympic finals but never won gold.
