Which automaker produces the Porsche 911?

The Porsche 911 is produced by Porsche. It is Porsche’s enduring rear-engine sports-car line, first introduced in 1964 as a successor to the Porsche 356.

The car was originally developed under the internal project number 901 and appeared publicly at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. A naming dispute with Peugeot over three-digit names containing a zero led Porsche to rename it 911 for production. The model’s characteristic rear-mounted flat-six engine and rounded silhouette became central parts of its identity.

Early 911s used air-cooled engines and torsion-bar suspension. The 996 generation, launched in 1998, brought water cooling, while later generations added all-wheel drive, turbocharging, hybrid assistance, and extensive electronic systems. Despite those changes, the basic 911 formula remains recognizable.

A common mix-up is confusing Porsche with Volkswagen because both companies have shared corporate ties and the Porsche 911 and Volkswagen Beetle have related historical engineering roots. Volkswagen does not manufacture the 911; Porsche AG does. The model has also spawned closely related performance versions such as the Carrera, Turbo, GT3, and GT3 RS.
