Chevrolet is an automobile division of General Motors, commonly abbreviated GM. The brand sells passenger cars, trucks, commercial vehicles, and performance models in markets around the world. Although Chevrolet has its own identity, dealerships, products, and branding, it is not an independent automaker separate from GM.

Louis Chevrolet, Arthur Chevrolet, and GM founder William C. Durant established the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in 1911. Durant later used Chevrolet in a reverse merger to regain control of General Motors in 1918. The brand then became GM’s mainstream volume marque, positioned to compete directly with Ford and its Model T.

A frequent mix-up is treating Chevrolet as synonymous with all of GM. Chevrolet is one GM division alongside Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. The Chevrolet name is also often shortened to “Chevy,” while General Motors is the parent company that owns and manufactures the brand.
