Which automaker produced the Flathead V8 engine?

The story behind the answer

Which automaker produced the Flathead V8 engine? Ford Motor Company produced it.

Introduced for the 1932 model year, Ford’s flathead V8 made eight-cylinder power available in relatively affordable cars and trucks. The engine was installed first in the 1932 Ford Model 18 and became one of the defining powerplants of early American performance culture.

Its side-valve design placed the valves in the engine block rather than in the cylinder head. That layout simplified production but created cooling and exhaust-routing challenges. Despite those limitations, the engine became a favorite of hot rodders because Ford produced huge numbers of cars, replacement parts, and aftermarket performance components.

The U.S. consumer version remained in production through 1953, when it was replaced by Ford’s overhead-valve Y-block V8. A common mix-up is confusing Ford’s flathead with later Chevrolet small-blocks or Chrysler Hemi engines, which were also hugely influential in hot rodding but were different engine families.
