Which Australian tree frog is also called White’s tree frog?

The story behind the answer

The Australian green tree frog is also called White’s tree frog. It is a large, robust frog native to Australia and New Guinea, and it is one of the country’s best-known amphibians.

The frog was named after the English naturalist John White, whose 1790 account included an early scientific description. Its scientific name, Litoria caerulea, is associated with the species’ blue-green coloration in some historical specimens, although living frogs are commonly bright green.

Australian green tree frogs spend much of their time in vegetation, but they also occupy buildings, tanks and other human structures near water. Their broad toe pads help them climb smooth surfaces.

They eat insects, spiders and other small animals. The species is popular in captivity because it is hardy and long-lived, but wild populations remain dependent on suitable moist habitats and protection from disease and environmental change.
