What is the scientific name of the Australian emu?

The story behind the answer

The scientific name of the Australian emu is Dromaius novaehollandiae.

The emu is Australia’s largest native bird and the second-largest living bird by height, after the ostrich. It is a flightless ratite, meaning it belongs to a group of birds with reduced wings and a flat breastbone that lacks the keel supporting powerful flight muscles.

Adult emus can reach about 1.9 metres in height and are found across much of mainland Australia in habitats including grasslands, woodlands and scrub. They feed on plants, insects and other small food items, and can travel long distances while searching for resources.

The species name is sometimes confused with that of the southern cassowary, Casuarius casuarius, another Australian ratite. Unlike the cassowary, the emu has a long, bare-looking blue-grey neck and lacks the cassowary’s prominent casque and brightly coloured neck.
