Which Australian suburb hosted the first McDonald's in Oceania?

The story behind the answer

Yagoona hosted the first McDonald’s restaurant in Oceania.

The suburban Sydney restaurant opened in 1971 as McDonald’s first Australian outlet and the first in Oceania. Yagoona is in southwestern Sydney, in New South Wales, and the original site was on the Hume Highway, near Yagoona railway station. Its opening marked the chain’s arrival in the Southern Hemisphere’s major English-speaking market.

Carlton, Bondi and Parramatta are plausible alternatives because each is strongly associated with Sydney or Melbourne’s commercial life, but none was the location of Australia’s first McDonald’s. The canonical answer is the suburb of Yagoona, rather than Sydney, the broader metropolitan city.

The original Yagoona restaurant closed in 1994. McDonald’s later announced a replacement at the same site for the brand’s Australian 50th anniversary, and the new restaurant opened on December 17, 2021. That anniversary reopening connected the modern outlet with the country’s first McDonald’s location.
