Which Australian lizard is known for displaying a large frill around its neck?

The story behind the answer

The frilled lizard is the Australian lizard known for displaying a large frill around its neck.

When threatened, it opens its mouth, raises its body and spreads the broad skin membrane supported by cartilage rods around its throat. The sudden display makes the lizard look much larger and may startle a predator. If the threat continues, it often runs upright on its hind legs toward a tree.

Frilled lizards live mainly in northern Australia and southern New Guinea, especially in tropical savanna woodland. They spend much of their time in trees, where their mottled brown colouring provides camouflage. Their diet includes insects, spiders and small vertebrates.

The frill is not a permanent collar of bone or scales; it is a fold of skin that normally lies against the neck. The species is sometimes confused with Australian blue-tongued skinks, which defend themselves by exposing a blue tongue rather than expanding a neck frill.
