Which Australian bird is the largest owl species on the continent?

The story behind the answer

The powerful owl is Australia’s largest owl species. It is a large forest-dwelling predator found mainly along the eastern and southeastern coasts, including wooded areas near major cities.

Powerful owls hunt at night and commonly take possums, gliders, birds and large insects. Their ability to capture substantial arboreal mammals makes them an important top predator in Australian forests. Pairs generally maintain territories and may use large tree hollows for nesting.

The species depends heavily on mature forest because old trees provide both nesting hollows and prey habitat. Clearing, fragmentation and the removal of hollow-bearing trees can therefore reduce local populations.

Despite its name, the powerful owl is not named for unusual physical strength. The word refers to its impressive size and predatory role. It is also distinct from the barking owl, whose call is often described as resembling a dog’s bark.
