Which Australian bird has the longest bill of any living bird?
Answer
Australian pelican
Answer
Australian pelican
The Australian pelican has the longest bill of any living bird.
Its bill can reach about 50 centimetres (20 inches) in length, while the bird uses its large throat pouch like a scoop. The pouch is not a storage bag for food; it helps the pelican catch fish and drain away water before swallowing.
Australian pelicans live across much of Australia and also occur in New Guinea, Indonesia, and some nearby Pacific islands. They are especially associated with inland waterways, coastal lagoons, estuaries, and temporary lakes. Unlike some pelicans, they can travel far inland when water conditions are favourable.
The Australian pelican is sometimes confused with the American white pelican because both have white-and-black plumage and enormous bills. The Australian species is distinguished by its pink bill, which becomes especially vivid during the breeding season. Its wingspan can approach 2.5 metres, making it one of Australia’s most conspicuous waterbirds.
