The Australian actress who starred in the 2004 Chanel No. 5 commercial directed by Baz Luhrmann was Nicole Kidman.
The advertisement was presented as No. 5 the Film, a lavish short film built around Kidman as a famous woman escaping her public life. Rodrigo Santoro co-starred, and the production borrowed the visual scale and romantic melodrama of Luhrmann’s feature films.
Chanel treated the commercial as branded entertainment rather than a conventional perfume spot. The original version ran for about 180 seconds, while shorter television edits were also produced. Karl Lagerfeld designed the costumes, adding another major Chanel name to the project.
A common mix-up is Baz Luhrmann’s later Chanel No. 5 campaign, The One That I Want, which starred Gisele Bündchen and Michiel Huisman in 2014. Kidman’s campaign belongs to the earlier 2004–2005 period and remains one of the best-known celebrity fragrance films.
