The Audi R8 was Audi’s first mid-engined production sports car. Its engine sits behind the passenger compartment but ahead of the rear axle, giving the car a classic mid-engine layout and balanced weight distribution.
The R8 began as the Audi Le Mans quattro concept, shown in 2003. The production model arrived in 2006, initially with a 4.2-litre FSI V8 and permanent quattro all-wheel drive. Audi Sport GmbH, then known as quattro GmbH, developed and built it at Neckarsulm.
The R8 shared engineering and components with the Lamborghini Gallardo because both brands belonged to Volkswagen Group. That connection sometimes causes confusion, but the R8 remained an Audi model with its own aluminium Audi Space Frame structure and styling.
The Audi TT is a front-engined compact sports car, while the RS6 is a high-performance executive model. The legendary Audi Quattro was also front-engined, so neither is the answer to this question.
