Which Atlantic hurricane holds the record for the longest duration as a named storm? Hurricane Ginger holds the record for the longest consecutive duration as a named Atlantic tropical cyclone. In 1971, Ginger lasted about 27.25 days, from September 6 to October 3, including 20 days at hurricane strength.

Ginger formed in the western Atlantic and initially moved eastward or northeastward. After reaching peak winds of 110 mph, it slowed, turned westward, passed near Bermuda, and eventually approached the North Carolina coast. It made landfall on September 30 as a minimal hurricane before becoming extratropical several days later.

The record has an important historical qualification. The 1899 San Ciriaco hurricane was later found to have existed as a tropical cyclone for longer overall, but its tropical-cyclone history was not continuous. Ginger therefore remains the recognized record-holder for the longest uninterrupted named-storm duration. Ginger was also the final target of Project Stormfury, an effort to weaken hurricanes by seeding rainbands with silver iodide.
