Which 2005 Atlantic hurricane became the first recorded tropical cyclone to make landfall in Spain?

The story behind the answer

Hurricane Vince was the 2005 Atlantic hurricane that became the first recorded tropical cyclone to make landfall in Spain. It reached the Iberian Peninsula near Huelva on 11 October 2005, by then weakened to a tropical depression.

Vince was remarkable because it developed in the far-eastern Atlantic over unusually cool water, conditions normally considered unfavorable for tropical systems. It formed as a subtropical storm on 8 October, became a tropical storm the next day, and briefly reached hurricane strength before weakening.

The National Hurricane Center described Vince as the first tropical cyclone on record to make landfall on the Iberian Peninsula. Some historical documents have been interpreted as evidence that an earlier storm may have affected the region in 1842, but that event was not conclusively classified as a tropical cyclone. Vince therefore remains the standard answer.

A common mix-up is assuming Vince struck Spain as a hurricane. It did not: its Spanish landfall occurred after it had weakened to tropical-depression strength.
