Which athlete won the men's 100m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?

Marcell Jacobs won the men’s 100 metres at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He won the final in 9.80 seconds on 1 August 2021, when the Games were held a year later than planned because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jacobs, representing Italy, came through in a dramatic final after running 9.84 seconds in the semifinals. He surged past American Fred Kerley late in the race to win, while Kerley took silver in 9.84 and Canada’s Andre De Grasse won bronze in 9.89. Jacobs’s victory made him the first Italian Olympic champion in the men’s 100 metres.

His winning time was also a European record at the time. The race had an unusual build-up: defending champion Usain Bolt had retired, and several pre-Games favorites failed to reach the final. Christian Coleman was absent after a suspension, while Su Bingtian reached the final and finished sixth. The event is called “Tokyo 2020,” but both the qualifying rounds and final took place in 2021.
