In January 1980, guitarist Peter Buck worked at Wuxtry Records in Athens, Georgia, where he met vocalist Michael Stipe. Their shared enthusiasm for punk and proto-punk artists—including Patti Smith, Television, and the Velvet Underground—helped spark R.E.M.’s formation.

Wuxtry was founded in Athens in 1976 by Dan Wall and Mark Methe. The independent shop became part of the city’s influential music culture and employed several musicians besides Buck, including Kate Pierson of the B-52’s.

The store encounter did not immediately produce a finished band. Buck and Stipe connected first, then met drummer Bill Berry and bassist Mike Mills through mutual friend Kathleen O’Brien. R.E.M. began rehearsing later in 1980 and played its first show that April.
