BlackRock became the first company to manage more than $10 trillion in assets.
BlackRock reported more than $10 trillion in assets under management in the fourth quarter of 2021. The company manages money for institutions, governments, retirement plans, financial advisers, and individual investors through mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, separate accounts, and other products.
Its iShares exchange-traded-fund business is a major part of its global presence. BlackRock also developed Aladdin, a technology platform used for investment analysis, risk management, and portfolio operations by BlackRock and outside institutions.
Assets under management are not the same as market capitalization or money owned by the asset manager. They represent client assets managed on behalf of investors, while BlackRock’s own stock-market value is the value of its publicly traded equity. Vanguard, State Street, and Fidelity also manage enormous sums, but BlackRock reached this stated threshold first.
