Which Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag character is the game's main protagonist?

The story behind the answer

Edward Kenway is the main protagonist of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Edward is a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with the Assassin–Templar conflict while pursuing wealth and status in the Caribbean during the early eighteenth century. His story begins before he fully understands the political and philosophical stakes of the conflict, making his personal transformation a major part of the game.

Edward belongs to the Kenway family, which also includes his son Haytham and grandson Ratonhnhaké:ton, better known as Connor. Those characters are central to Assassin's Creed III, so players sometimes identify one of them as Black Flag's lead.

Black Flag combines land-based exploration with naval gameplay. Edward commands the ship Jackdaw, visits Caribbean ports, hunts animals, searches for treasure, and confronts historical figures such as Edward Thatch, commonly known as Blackbeard. The game was released in 2013.
