Which Assassin's Creed game first introduced the grappling hook as a standard traversal tool?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Syndicate first introduced the grappling hook as a standard traversal tool in the main series.

The device is used by Jacob and Evie Frye to cross gaps, reach rooftops, and climb London's architecture more quickly. It fires a line between suitable points and can also create a zip line, reducing the need to climb every building by hand. This was especially useful in a dense nineteenth-century city filled with tall structures, railway bridges, and industrial spaces.

The grappling hook changed the rhythm of exploration, but it did not replace parkour. Players still climb, leap, and move across rooftops, while the device provides a faster way to handle long vertical or horizontal gaps. Earlier games included other mobility tools, such as the rope dart in Assassin's Creed III and the hookblade in Revelations, but neither functioned as Syndicate's dedicated grappling launcher.

Syndicate is set in London in 1868. Its technological setting allows the traversal equipment to feel more mechanical and industrial than the tools used by earlier protagonists.
