Which Asian country is the world’s largest landlocked country by area?

The story behind the answer

Kazakhstan is the world’s largest landlocked country by area.

Kazakhstan covers about 2.7 million square kilometres, making it the ninth-largest country overall. It occupies most of Central Asia and extends westward into a small part of Europe, with Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan as neighbors.

Although Kazakhstan has no ocean coastline, it borders the Caspian Sea, which is the world’s largest inland body of water. The Caspian is technically a lake under many geographic definitions, so it does not make Kazakhstan a coastal country.

Kazakhstan became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991. Its capital is Astana, while Almaty remains the country’s largest city and an important cultural and economic center. The country is also famous for vast steppe landscapes and Baikonur Cosmodrome.
