Which Asian country contains the ancient city of Ephesus, known for the Temple of Artemis?

The story behind the answer

Turkey contains the ancient city of Ephesus, known for its association with the Temple of Artemis.

Ephesus was a major Greek and later Roman city on the western coast of Anatolia, near present-day Selçuk in İzmir Province. Its location helped it prosper as a port and commercial centre, although changing coastlines eventually left the ruins inland.

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The sanctuary was rebuilt several times after destruction by fire, warfare, and other events. Only fragments of the temple survive at the archaeological site today.

Ephesus is also famous for the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, and its marble streets. It is sometimes confused with the nearby House of the Virgin Mary, a later Christian pilgrimage site rather than an ancient civic building. Ephesus became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
