Which Asian country contains Angkor Wat, the enormous temple complex built by King Suryavarman II?

The story behind the answer

Cambodia contains Angkor Wat, the enormous temple complex built by King Suryavarman II.

Angkor Wat was constructed in the early 12th century during the Khmer Empire, whose capital was Angkor. It was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and later became an important Buddhist site. Its galleries contain extensive bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology, royal processions and scenes linked with Khmer history.

The complex is famous for its five central towers, which symbolize Mount Meru in Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. A large moat and long causeway surround the principal temple, creating the monumental layout seen in photographs. Angkor Wat is also shown on Cambodia’s national flag.

Angkor Wat is part of the wider Angkor archaeological park near Siem Reap. Visitors sometimes use “Angkor Wat” to describe the whole ancient capital, but the name properly refers to the specific temple complex within the larger Angkor site.
