Santana won eight Grammys at the 2000 Grammy Awards, tying the record for most wins by an act in one night.
The band’s sweep followed the success of Supernatural, its comeback album featuring collaborations with artists including Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, and CeeLo Green. The album won Album of the Year, while “Smooth” won Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Santana’s eight victories matched Michael Jackson’s total from the 1984 ceremony. The achievement was especially striking because Santana had first become prominent in the late 1960s and then returned to major commercial success decades later.
The record is about wins at one ceremony, not total career victories. It is also separate from the number of awards attached to one album, although Supernatural was responsible for much of Santana’s 2000 haul.
