Public Enemy released the 1988 album “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.”
The album was Public Enemy’s second studio record and followed their 1987 debut, Yo! Bum Rush the Show. Produced by the Bomb Squad, it used dense layers of samples, sirens, funk fragments, and abrupt transitions to create an intentionally forceful sound. Chuck D delivered politically charged verses, while Flavor Flav supplied energetic contrast and comic timing.
Songs such as “Bring the Noise,” “Don’t Believe the Hype,” and “Rebel Without a Pause” made the album a central statement of late-1980s political hip hop. It reached number 42 on the US Billboard 200 and was later certified platinum.
The title is sometimes shortened incorrectly to “It Takes a Nation.” The full title is “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back,” a phrase emphasizing the group’s confrontational, collective perspective.
