Which artist performed “Virtual Insanity,” whose video won the 1997 MTV VMA for Best Special Effects?

The story behind the answer

Jamiroquai performed “Virtual Insanity,” whose video won the 1997 MTV Video Music Award for Best Special Effects.

The video is famous for making a room appear to move while lead singer Jay Kay dances across the floor. The walls and floor seem to shift in relation to him, creating the illusion that he is sliding or that the furniture is moving.

Director Jonathan Glazer and the production team achieved the effect with controlled movement of the set and carefully coordinated camera work. The apparent simplicity of the room made the visual trick especially memorable, because viewers had to work out how the movement was being produced.

“Virtual Insanity” was released in 1996 as a single from Jamiroquai’s album Travelling Without Moving. The video also won additional honors at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, helping make the clip one of the era’s most recognizable examples of performance-based visual effects.
