Which artist married Georgia O'Keeffe in 1924?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz married Georgia O'Keeffe in 1924.

Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, gallery owner, and modern-art promoter. He first encountered O'Keeffe's work through a series of abstract charcoal drawings that friend and artist Anita Pollitzer brought to him in 1916. Stieglitz exhibited those drawings without O'Keeffe's initial permission, then became an important advocate for her art.

The couple married on December 11, 1924. Their relationship joined two major figures in American modernism, but O'Keeffe eventually established an artistic identity independent of Stieglitz's career. Stieglitz operated the galleries known as 291, the Intimate Gallery, and An American Place, all important venues for modern art in New York.

Stieglitz was more than O'Keeffe's husband: he helped introduce European avant-garde art to American audiences and made celebrated photographs of O'Keeffe. However, describing O'Keeffe simply as his muse overlooks her own achievements. She became a major painter in her own right and later spent increasing amounts of time in New Mexico. Stieglitz died in 1946.
