Constantin Brâncuși created Bird in Space, the streamlined sculpture represented in the Guggenheim’s modern-art collection.
Brâncuși developed Bird in Space as a series of sculptures between the 1920s and 1940s. Rather than copying a bird’s wings, feathers, or body, he reduced the subject to a slender, upward-sweeping form. The polished surface emphasizes light and movement, making the sculpture appear to rise from its base.
The series became especially important in the history of modern sculpture because it challenged traditional expectations about recognizable subjects. A related 1926 version famously became part of a United States customs dispute after officials questioned whether its abstract form qualified as art.
The title refers to the idea of flight rather than to a literal bird in a naturalistic pose. Brâncuși’s work is therefore often discussed as an example of abstraction that seeks the essential character of a subject.
