Which artist and photographer introduced Georgia O'Keeffe’s drawings to Alfred Stieglitz?
Answer
Anita Pollitzer
Answer
Anita Pollitzer
Anita Pollitzer introduced Georgia O'Keeffe’s drawings to Alfred Stieglitz. Pollitzer was an artist and educator who had studied with O'Keeffe at the University of Virginia.
In 1915, Pollitzer showed O'Keeffe’s abstract charcoal drawings to Stieglitz at his New York gallery. He recognized their originality and exhibited some of them at 291 the following year, without O'Keeffe’s initial permission.
The exhibition began the professional relationship between O'Keeffe and Stieglitz. It eventually led to her first solo exhibition at 291 in 1917 and to Stieglitz’s extensive promotion and photography of her.
Pollitzer later wrote a biography of O'Keeffe, A Woman on Paper, published after Pollitzer’s death. Her role is sometimes omitted from brief accounts, but she was the key intermediary who brought the drawings to Stieglitz’s attention.
