Which artist and photographer first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's work in 1916?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's work in 1916. He showed a group of her charcoal abstractions at his New York gallery, 291, after receiving them through the artist and educator Anita Pollitzer.

Stieglitz was a major photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art in the United States. His gallery introduced American audiences to European modernism while also supporting emerging American artists. O'Keeffe’s abstract drawings immediately attracted his attention because of their unusual economy and expressive power.

Their professional relationship became personal. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, and the two married in 1924. He continued to promote her work, although O'Keeffe eventually insisted on a more independent career and developed a distinct identity beyond the image created by his photographs. Stieglitz died in 1946, while O'Keeffe lived until 1986.
