Which artist and photographer did Georgia O'Keeffe marry in 1924?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe married the artist and photographer Alfred Stieglitz in 1924.
Stieglitz was a leading promoter of modern art in the United States and operated the influential galleries known as 291 and An American Place. He first encountered O'Keeffe’s abstract charcoal drawings through a friend and exhibited them in New York in 1916 without her initial permission.
Their marriage connected two important figures in American modernism, although O'Keeffe maintained her own artistic identity. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits and nudes over many years.
They spent substantial periods apart because of their work and interests. Stieglitz remained in New York while O'Keeffe increasingly divided her time between New York and New Mexico. He died in 1946, more than a decade before O'Keeffe permanently left New York.
