Which artist and gallery owner did Georgia O'Keeffe marry in 1924?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe married Alfred Stieglitz in 1924. Stieglitz was a prominent photographer, modern-art promoter, and gallery owner whose New York gallery, 291, helped introduce American audiences to European avant-garde art and innovative work by American artists.

Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's charcoal abstractions after a friend showed them to him in 1916. He exhibited her work without initially having met her, and their correspondence developed into a long personal and professional relationship. He photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits over several decades.

Their marriage joined two major figures in American modernism, although their careers remained distinct. Stieglitz continued his photographic work and gallery activities, while O'Keeffe increasingly pursued her own subjects, including flowers, New York architecture, and New Mexico landscapes. Stieglitz died in 1946.
