Which art teacher at Columbia University’s Teachers College influenced Georgia O'Keeffe?

The story behind the answer

Arthur Wesley Dow influenced Georgia O'Keeffe while she studied at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dow’s teaching emphasized composition, line, color, and the arrangement of forms rather than simply copying visible objects.

That approach was important to O'Keeffe because it encouraged her to treat art as an organized visual language. She later used simplified shapes and strongly structured compositions in both abstract works and recognizable paintings.

O'Keeffe had already received formal training at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. Dow’s ideas helped redirect her toward a more personal and experimental style. He was not the same person as Alfred Stieglitz, the photographer and gallery owner who later promoted her work.
