Answer
Art Students League of New York
Answer
Art Students League of New York
Georgia O’Keeffe attended the Art Students League of New York before teaching art in Texas.
She studied at the Art Students League in 1907 and won a scholarship that enabled her to attend a summer school in Lake George. At the League, she studied under William Merritt Chase, a prominent American painter and teacher.
O’Keeffe later became dissatisfied with academic imitation and sought a more personal approach. She worked as a commercial artist and teacher before producing the abstract charcoal drawings that brought her to Alfred Stieglitz’s attention. In 1916, she began teaching at West Texas State Normal College.
The Art Students League was founded in 1875 and became known for relatively open access compared with traditional academies. O’Keeffe also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, but that was a separate institution and not the school asked about here.
