Which art school did Georgia O’Keeffe attend in New York before studying with Arthur Wesley Dow?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O’Keeffe attended the Art Students League in New York before studying with Arthur Wesley Dow.

O’Keeffe studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1907 to 1908. There she worked under artists including William Merritt Chase, whose instruction emphasized observational painting and traditional studio practice. She won the League’s William Merritt Chase still-life prize during her period of study.

The school was one stage in a broader education. Before New York, she had studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; after the Art Students League, she later attended Teachers College, Columbia University, where Dow’s ideas redirected her toward abstraction. These experiences show that her mature style emerged through several different kinds of training.

The Art Students League was not a degree-granting university in the usual sense. It was an independent art school founded in 1875 and known for open, studio-based instruction. O’Keeffe’s short period there is therefore distinct from both her earlier Chicago study and her later work with Dow.
