Which art school did Georgia O'Keeffe attend in New York before becoming a professional artist?
Answer
Art Students League of New York
Answer
Art Students League of New York
Georgia O'Keeffe attended the Art Students League of New York.
O'Keeffe studied at the Art Students League in New York in 1907 and 1908. She worked under the instruction of William Merritt Chase, a prominent American painter and teacher, and won a scholarship for her still-life painting Dead Rabbit with Copper Pot.
The school offered life drawing, painting, and other classes to artists outside the restrictions of a conventional degree program. Its flexible structure attracted many important American artists, and its training gave O'Keeffe a foundation in observational drawing and painting.
She later moved away from academic realism and developed an abstract approach influenced by modernist ideas and by Arthur Wesley Dow's teaching. O'Keeffe had already studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before attending the Art Students League, so the two schools should not be conflated.
