Which art movement is Georgia O'Keeffe most often associated with in American art history?
Answer
American modernism
Answer
American modernism
Georgia O'Keeffe is most often associated with American modernism. Her paintings helped develop a distinctly American form of modern art through abstraction, simplified shapes, bold color, and close attention to natural and architectural subjects.
O'Keeffe’s work does not fit one narrow visual formula. She made abstract charcoal drawings, enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, animal bones, desert cliffs, and cloud paintings. Across these subjects, she used reduction and scale to make familiar forms appear unfamiliar and monumental.
She is sometimes grouped with Precisionism, especially because of her clear contours and interest in architecture, but American modernism is the broader and more standard classification. Abstract expressionism was a later movement and is not the usual primary label for O'Keeffe’s career.
