Which art gallery first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's work in 1916?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz's gallery 291 first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's work in 1916.

The gallery's formal name was the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, but it became widely known as 291 after its address at 291 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Stieglitz used the space to show avant-garde European and American art, photography, and experimental work.

O'Keeffe was living in Texas when Anita Pollitzer showed Stieglitz some of O'Keeffe's charcoal abstractions. Stieglitz included them in a group exhibition at 291 without O'Keeffe's advance permission. The event helped establish her New York reputation and began her long personal and professional connection with Stieglitz.

The gallery closed in 1917 because of financial difficulties. Its name is often confused with An American Place, the later gallery Stieglitz operated from 1929 until his death.
