Which art educator strongly influenced Georgia O'Keeffe at Columbia University?
Answer
Arthur Wesley Dow
Answer
Arthur Wesley Dow
Arthur Wesley Dow strongly influenced Georgia O'Keeffe at Columbia University. She studied with Dow at Columbia’s Teachers College in New York in 1914 and 1915.
Dow taught that composition could be built from line, color, and tone rather than by simply copying the visible world. His approach gave O'Keeffe a framework for making expressive, increasingly abstract images and helped her move beyond the academic training she had previously received.
O'Keeffe later credited Dow’s ideas with helping her find an individual artistic language. Her charcoal abstractions of 1915 and 1916 developed soon after this period. Dow was also an important American art educator, printmaker, and designer whose teaching influenced many artists.
