Which art dealer founded the New York gallery 291, where Georgia O’Keeffe first exhibited?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz founded the New York gallery 291, where Georgia O’Keeffe first exhibited.
Stieglitz opened the gallery in 1905 at 291 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Its address supplied the name by which it became known. The gallery initially focused on photography and later presented European avant-garde art alongside innovative American work.
O’Keeffe’s charcoal drawings were shown there in 1916, after Anita Pollitzer brought them to Stieglitz’s attention. The exhibition introduced her work to an important New York art audience and began Stieglitz’s long promotion of her career.
The gallery is often remembered mainly for European modernists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Cézanne, but its role in O’Keeffe’s career was also substantial. It was not founded by O’Keeffe herself; Stieglitz created and directed it.
