Which architectural feature inspired McDonald’s famous golden logo?

The story behind the answer

The Golden Arches inspired McDonald’s famous golden logo.

The arches began as architectural features on McDonald’s restaurant buildings. Architect Stanley Clark Meston designed the notable 1950s restaurant design, which used two large yellow arches at the sides of the building. The arches were intended to make the restaurants visible and distinctive from the road.

As McDonald’s expanded, the arches became more than a building element. In 1962, the company adopted a stylized version that formed the familiar “M” associated with the brand. The symbol eventually became one of the world’s most recognizable corporate marks.

The Golden Arches are sometimes mistaken for a logo created independently of the restaurants’ architecture. Their branding importance grew precisely because customers first encountered them as visible roadside features.
