Which architect designed Venice’s Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, home of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection?

Lorenzo Boschetti designed Venice’s Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, the home of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

Boschetti proposed the palace in the 18th century for the Venier family, but the grand design was never completed. Only the low ground-floor portion facing the Grand Canal was built, giving the building its unusual, horizontal appearance among Venice’s more vertically developed palazzi.

Peggy Guggenheim purchased the unfinished palace in 1949 and made it her home and exhibition space. After her death, the building became the permanent home of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, one of Venice’s best-known collections of modern art.

Carlo Scarpa is sometimes connected with the palace because he designed important alterations and display features for Peggy Guggenheim’s collection. He was not the original architect of Palazzo Venier dei Leoni; that role belongs to Lorenzo Boschetti.
