Which architect designed the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, completed in 1575?

Mimar Sinan designed the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, completed in 1575.

The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II and built between 1568 and 1575. Its enormous central dome rises above a nearly square prayer hall, while four exceptionally slender minarets frame the building’s corners.

Sinan was already an elderly man when he completed Selimiye. He considered it his masterpiece, saying that he had reached the level of a journeyman with the Şehzade Mosque, become a master with the Süleymaniye, and achieved mastery with Selimiye.

The mosque’s interior includes Iznik tiles, marble details, and a finely organized structural system. Although Edirne is now in European Turkey, Selimiye belongs to the classical Ottoman architectural tradition associated with Istanbul and the imperial court.
