Isozaki, a Japanese architect known for combining modernist ideas with historical and regional references, converted an industrial structure at 575 Broadway into a museum. The Guggenheim Museum SoHo opened in 1992 as a Manhattan venue for modern and contemporary art.

The project differed from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue, whose building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It also differed from the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, whose expressive structure was designed by Frank Gehry.

The SoHo branch was relatively short-lived and closed in 2001. Its brief history is nevertheless significant because it demonstrated how the Guggenheim could operate in an adapted urban building rather than only in landmark purpose-built museums.
