Which architect designed London Underground's distinctive Southgate station?

The story behind the answer

Charles Holden designed London Underground's distinctive Southgate station.

Southgate is on the Piccadilly line and opened in 1933 as part of the extension from Arnos Grove toward Cockfosters. Holden designed the station as a circular building with a prominent concrete canopy, a style that gives it a futuristic appearance while keeping the ticket hall compact and functional.

The station formed part of a wider programme of Underground construction led by managing director Frank Pick. Holden designed many stations for this expansion, combining modernist architecture with practical features such as generous lighting, clear circulation and integrated signs.

Holden is sometimes confused with Edward Johnston. Johnston designed the typeface used on Underground signs, whereas Holden was the architect responsible for many station buildings. Southgate's unusual circular form is one of Holden's most recognisable London designs.
