Which architect designed Florence’s Palazzo Rucellai in the 15th-century Italian Renaissance?
Answer
Leon Battista Alberti
Answer
Leon Battista Alberti
Leon Battista Alberti designed Florence’s Palazzo Rucellai during the 15th-century Italian Renaissance.
Giovanni Rucellai commissioned the palace, which was built between 1446 and 1451. Its facade uses pilasters and entablatures based on ancient Roman architectural orders, giving a wealthy Florentine residence a carefully classical appearance.
The building is often associated with Bernardo Rossellino, who supervised construction, but Alberti is credited with the architectural design. This distinction explains why both names can appear in accounts of the palace.
Palazzo Rucellai helped establish the Renaissance idea that a private urban palace could communicate education, status, and order through its classical proportions. Alberti later explained related architectural principles in De re aedificatoria.
