Which archangel is known as the leader of God's army?

The story behind the answer

Michael is traditionally known as the leader of God’s army.

In Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, Michael is portrayed as a warrior and defender who commands heavenly forces. The New Testament’s Book of Revelation describes Michael and his angels battling the dragon, identified with the Devil or Satan. The Epistle of Jude also refers to him as “the archangel” in a dispute with the Devil over Moses’ body.

Christian tradition developed Michael’s military role into the title commander or prince of the heavenly host. This is why paintings often show him with a sword, armor, a banner, or a defeated dragon. The image is symbolic of the triumph of good over evil rather than a description of an ordinary human-style army.

Michael is sometimes confused with Gabriel because both are named archangels in Christian tradition. Gabriel is chiefly a messenger, while Michael is chiefly associated with spiritual warfare and protection. His feast is commonly celebrated with Gabriel and Raphael on September 29 in the Roman Catholic calendar.
