How many angels are mentioned by name in the Hebrew Bible?

The story behind the answer

Two angels are mentioned by name in the Hebrew Bible: Michael and Gabriel.

Both names appear in the Book of Daniel, one of the latest books of the Hebrew Bible. Gabriel interprets Daniel’s visions in chapters 8 and 9, while Michael is described in Daniel 10 and 12 as a heavenly prince who protects Israel and participates in a cosmic conflict.

Other familiar angelic names come from texts outside the Hebrew Bible’s canonical collection. Raphael is named in the Book of Tobit, which is accepted as Scripture by Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches but not included in the Jewish or most Protestant canons. Uriel appears in later Jewish and Christian writings, including the Book of Enoch, rather than in the Hebrew Bible itself.

The Hebrew Bible does mention unnamed angels and groups such as cherubim and seraphim. Therefore, the answer counts individual angels whose personal names are explicitly recorded, not every angelic being or every title used for heavenly figures.
