Answer
Apollo 16
Which Apollo mission landed in the Descartes Highlands? Apollo 16 landed there on April 21, 1972.
The Descartes Highlands, on the Moon’s near side, was chosen because scientists wanted samples from ancient lunar highland terrain rather than another mare site. Apollo 16’s landing zone lay between North Ray and South Ray craters, whose impacts exposed material beneath the surface.
The mission was commanded by John Young, with Charles Duke serving as lunar module pilot. The pair explored the area using the Lunar Roving Vehicle, while Ken Mattingly remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Casper.
A common mix-up is Apollo 15, which also investigated highland-related geology but landed at Hadley–Apennine, near the edge of Mare Imbrium. Apollo 16’s samples showed that the Descartes and Cayley formations were largely impact-generated breccias, not volcanic rocks as some researchers had expected.
